Sayyiduna Sabrah bin Ma'bad (may Allah be pleased with him), a Companion of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), said: A group of people from various tribes gathered with Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "Let each man among you speak of the noble deeds of his people and the merit they had." So the people spoke until the turn came to a young man from Juhaynah. He narrated a hadith that he was unable to complete, so Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) turned to him and said: "O brother of Juhaynah, narrate it with your whole mouth. I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Juhaynah is from me and I am from them. They became angry at my anger and pleased at my pleasure. I become angry at their anger and pleased at their pleasure. Whoever angers them has angered me, and whoever angers me has angered Allah.'" At this, Mu'awiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You have lied; this hadith came only about Quraysh." So he recited these verses: "The sons of Mu'awiyah bin Harb call me a liar and revile me for what I said about Juhaynah. If I were to lie, I would have spoken in favour of my own people, Muzaynah, and I did not lie. Rather, I heard - while you were not present - the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Lawa Shunaynah saying: 'These people are from me and I am from them' - Juhaynah, on the day Uyaynah disputed with them. 'When they are angry, I am angry,' and in my pleasure there is a favour that is not slight. And they were not like Dhakwan and Ri'l, nor like the two ancestral clans of Juhaynah."
