Urwah relates in the story of the Conquest of Makkah: Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl fled, heading for Yemen. Umm Hakim bint al-Harith bin Hisham, who had become Muslim by then and was married to Ikrimah bin Abi Jahl, came and asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for permission to go in search of her husband. He (peace and blessings be upon him) gave her permission and granted Ikrimah safety. She set out with a Byzantine slave of hers; the slave sought to seduce her, and she kept giving him hopes and putting him off until she reached some people of the tribe of Akk, and she sought their help against him, so they restrained him and tied him up. Then she caught up with her husband in a part of Tihamah. He had boarded a ship, and when he sat in it he called upon al-Lat and al-Uzza. The people of the ship said: It is not permissible for anyone here to call upon anything other than Allah; He alone is to be called upon sincerely. Ikrimah said: By Allah, if He alone (is worthy of being called upon) at sea, then He alone is so on land too. So he swore by Allah that he would return to Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Ikrimah returned with his wife, came into the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and pledged allegiance to him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted his pledge. And when Banu Bakr were defeated, a man of Hudhayl came fleeing to his wife; she blamed him, called him a coward and reproached him for fleeing, so he said:
"If you had seen us on the day of al-Khandamah, when Safwan fled and Ikrimah fled too,
and the swords of the Muslims pursued us, cutting off every arm and skull,
you would not have uttered even the slightest word of blame."
