It is narrated from Jubayr bin Nufayr (may Allah have mercy on him) that when Darayya was conquered, Sayyiduna Iyad bin Ghanm (may Allah be pleased with him) dealt harshly with the chief of Darayya (punished him). Sayyiduna Hisham bin Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him and spoke to him harshly. Then, after some nights had passed, Hisham came to apologise and said: O Iyad, do you not know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people who will receive the severest punishment on the Day of Resurrection are those who punished people most severely in this world"? Iyad said to him: O Hisham, we too heard what you heard, saw what you saw, and kept the company of the one whose company you kept. Did you not, O Hisham, hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever has advice for a ruler should not tell it to him openly; rather he should take him by the hand and speak to him in private. If he accepts it, well and good; otherwise he has fulfilled what was his right and his duty." And, O Hisham, you are truly very bold, daring as you do against Allah's ruler. Did you not fear that Allah's ruler would kill you, and that you would become one slain by Allah's ruler?
