Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a military expedition, and the people were struck by severe hardship, until I saw sorrow on the faces of the Muslims and joy on the faces of the hypocrites. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this, he said: "By Allah, the sun will not set until Allah brings you provision." Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) was certain that Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) would prove true, so he bought forty riding camels along with the food on them, and sent nine of them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw this, he asked: "What is this?" They said: "Uthman has sent you a gift." At this, joy became visible on the face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and sorrow on the faces of the hypocrites. And I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raise both his hands so high that the whiteness of his armpits could be seen, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) with a supplication such as I never heard him make for anyone before or after: "O Allah, give to Uthman! O Allah, do (good) for Uthman!"
