Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 14688 — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْفَضْلِ السَّقَطِيُّ، وَعُبَيْدٌ الْعِجْلِيُّ قَالَا: ثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ عُمَرَ بْنِ أَبَانَ، ثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ إِدْرِيسَ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، وَشُعْبَةَ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ رَجَاءٍ، عَنْ أَوْسِ بْنِ ضَمْعَجٍ، عَنْ عُقْبَةَ بْنِ عَمْرٍو قَالَ: قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «يَؤُمُّ الْقَوْمَ أَقْرَؤُهُمْ لِكِتَابِ اللهِ، فَإِنْ كَانُوا فِي الْقِرَاءَةِ سَوَاءً فَأَقْدَمُهُمْ هِجْرَةً، فَإِنْ كَانُوا فِي الْهِجْرَةِ سَوَاءً فَأَقْدَمُهُمْ سِنًّا، وَلَا تَؤُمَّنَّ ذَا سُلْطَانٍ فِي سُلْطَانِهِ، وَلَا تَجْلِسْ عَلَى تَكْرِمَتِهِ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِ»
Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amr (Abu Mas'ud) (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people should be led in prayer by their best reciter of the Book of Allah. If they are equal in recitation, then the one who emigrated first. If they are equal in emigration, then the one oldest in age. Do not lead a person of authority in prayer within the area of his authority, and do not sit in his place of honour except with his permission."
