حَدَّثَنَا الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ التُّسْتَرِيُّ، ثَنَا يَحْيَى الْحِمَّانِيُّ، ثَنَا شَرِيكٌ، وَمَنْدَلُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِسْمَاعِيلَ بْنِ رَجَاءٍ، عَنْ أَوْسِ بْنِ ضَمْعَجٍ، عَنْ أَبِي مَسْعُودٍ قَالَ: قَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ: «يَؤُمُّ الْقَوْمَ أَقْرَؤُهُمْ لِكِتَابِ اللهِ، فَإِنْ كَانُوا فِي الْهِجْرَةِ سَوَاءً فَأَعْلَمُهُمْ بِالسُّنَّةِ، فَإِنْ كَانُوا فِيهَا سَوَاءً فَأَقْدَمُهُمْ إسْلَامًا، وَلَا تَؤُمَّ رَجُلًا فِي سُلْطَانِهِ، وَلَا تَجْلِسْ عَلَى تَكْرِمَتِهِ فِي بَيْتِهِ إلَّا أَنْ يَأْذَنَ لَكَ»
Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people should be led in prayer by their best reciter of the Book of Allah. If they are equal in emigration, then the one most knowledgeable of the Sunnah. If they are equal in that too, then the one who became Muslim first. Do not lead a man in prayer within the area of his authority, and do not sit in his place of honour in his house except with his permission."
