Yazid Dhu Misr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: I came to Sayyiduna Utbah bin Abd al-Sulami (may Allah be pleased with him), the Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: O Abu al-Walid, I was looking for sacrificial animals and found nothing but a goat with broken teeth, and I disliked it; so what do you say? Sayyiduna Utbah bin Abd (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Why did you not bring it to me so that I could sacrifice it? I said: Glory be to Allah! It would not be valid on your behalf and not valid on mine? He said: Yes, because you have doubt and I have no doubt. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) only forbade an animal whose ear is cut off from the root, one whose horn is uprooted from its base, one whose eye is gouged out, one that cannot keep up with the flock because of weakness and lameness, and one whose leg is broken; he forbade these defective animals.
