Yahya bin Bukayr narrated: "Utbah bin Ghazwan (may Allah be pleased with him) died in the year 17 AH on the road to Basrah, while serving as governor on behalf of Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him); at that time he was fifty-seven years old. It has also been said that he died in the year 20 AH. It was he who founded Basrah as a city, marked out its dwellings and built its mosque. It was he who conquered al-Ubullah. His governorship of Basrah lasted six months; Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) had appointed him to it."
