Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The horsemen of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (or the messengers of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)) came to Aqrab and took my paternal aunt and some people. When they brought them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), they were lined up before him (peace and blessings be upon him). My aunt said: "O Messenger of Allah, the one who would come (on my behalf) is far away, and the line of children has been cut off. I am a very old woman and have no strength for service, so be gracious to me; may Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, be gracious to you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And who is the one who would come on your behalf?" She said: "Adi bin Hatim." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The one who fled from Allah and His Messenger?" She said: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) was gracious to me (and released me). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) returned, there was a man at his (peace and blessings be upon him) side whom she thought was Ali. He said: "Ask him for a mount." She said: I asked him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered a she-donkey (to be given). (Then, coming to Adi,) I said: "You have done something that your father would never have done." And she said: "Go to him, whether out of desire or fear; so-and-so went to him and received (good) from him, and so-and-so went to him and received (good) from him." So I came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and saw that with him (peace and blessings be upon him) were a woman and some children, or a child, and they mentioned their closeness to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then I knew that he was not a king like Kisra and Caesar. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Adi, what made you flee (from Islam)? That it is said, 'There is no god but Allah'? Is there any god besides Allah? What made you flee? That it is said, 'Allah is the Greatest'? Is there anything greater than Allah?" So I accepted Islam, and I saw his (peace and blessings be upon him) face beam with joy. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Those upon whom is (Allah's) anger are the Jews, and those who are astray are the Christians." Then some people came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him (peace and blessings be upon him) (for help). He (peace and blessings be upon him) praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "To proceed: O people, you should give a little from your surplus (wealth), with a sa', with part of a sa', with a handful." (Shu'bah said: My strongest recollection is that he said: with a date, or with a piece of a date.) "For each one of you is going to meet Allah, and He will say to him: 'Did I not give you hearing and sight? Did I not give you wealth and children? So what have you sent ahead?' He will look in front of him, behind him, to his right and to his left, and will find nothing, and he will have nothing but his own face to shield himself from the Fire. So protect yourselves from the Fire, even if only with a piece of a date, and if you cannot find that, then with a good word. I do not fear poverty for you. Allah will surely help you and give to you, or open (the doors of conquest) for you, until a woman travels (alone) between al-Hirah and Yathrib, and the greatest fear for her mount will only be theft."
