Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim al-Ta'i (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting in the mosque. The people said: "This is Adi bin Hatim." I was a Christian, and I had come without any guarantee of safety or written agreement. When I was presented to him (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) took my hand, and before that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had said: "I hope that Allah will place his hand in my hand." He (peace and blessings be upon him) walked with me, and a woman with a child met him. They both said: "We have a need with you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) stood with her until he had fulfilled her need. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) took my hand and came to his house. A cushion was laid down for him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat on it, and I sat in front of him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: "Has nothing deceived you except that it is said, 'There is no god but Allah'? Do you know of any god besides Allah?" Then he spoke for a while, then said: "Has nothing deceived or harmed you except that it is said, 'Allah is the Greatest'? Do you know of anything greater than Allah?" I said: "No." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Jews are those upon whom is (Allah's) anger, and the Christians are astray." I said: "Then I am a hanif, a Muslim." I saw his (peace and blessings be upon him) face light up with joy. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave an order for me, and I stayed with a man from the Ansar, and I began coming to him (peace and blessings be upon him) at both ends of the day (morning and evening). One evening, while I was with him (peace and blessings be upon him), some people came wearing woollen cloaks. He (peace and blessings be upon him) led the prayer, then stood and urged (charity) for them, then said: "With a sa', or half a sa', or part of it, even if only with part of a handful, let each one of you shield his face from the heat of Hell or the Fire, even if only with a piece of a date. For each one of you is going to meet Allah, and He will say to him what I am saying to you: 'Did I not give you hearing and sight?' He will say: 'Yes, indeed.' Allah will say: 'Did I not give you wealth and children?' He will say: 'Yes, indeed.' Allah will say: 'Then what have you sent ahead for yourself?' He will look in front of him, behind him, to his right and to his left, and will find nothing with which to shield his face. So let each one of you shield his face from the Fire, even if only with a piece of a date, and if he cannot find that, then with a good word. I do not fear poverty for you, for Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is your Helper and the One who gives to you, until a woman travels (alone) between Yathrib and al-Hirah, and the greatest fear for her mount will only be theft." I began saying to myself: "Then where will the bandits of Tayyi' be (that is, how could that be possible)?"
