Amir al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Kufah, and I went to him with a group of the scholars of Kufah and those versed in the Book (of Allah). We said: Narrate to us a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Adi (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Yes. I came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Adi bin Hatim! Accept Islam and you will be safe." I said: And what is Islam? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That you bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah, and bear witness that I am the Messenger of Allah, and that you believe in the decree, all of it, its good and its evil, its sweet and its bitter."
