Imam al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Adi bin Hatim al-Ta'i (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Kufah, and I went to him with some of the people of Kufah. We said to him: "Narrate to us a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." He said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent with prophethood, I did not know of anyone among the Arabs who had more hatred and aversion for him (peace and blessings be upon him) than I did, until I went off to the Romans and became a Christian among them. Then, when news reached me of the good character to which he (peace and blessings be upon him) was calling, and of how people had gathered around him (peace and blessings be upon him), I travelled until I reached him (peace and blessings be upon him) and stood before him (peace and blessings be upon him). At that time Sayyiduna Suhayb, Sayyiduna Bilal and Sayyiduna Salman (may Allah be pleased with them) were with him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Adi bin Hatim, accept Islam and you will be safe." I said "Ikh, ikh" (the sound used to make a camel kneel), then made my camel kneel, sat down and joined my knee to his (peace and blessings be upon him) knee. I said: "O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?" He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That you believe in Allah, His angels, His Books and His Messengers, and that you believe in destiny (qadar), its good and its bad, its sweet and its bitter. O Adi bin Hatim, the Hour will not be established until the treasures of Chosroes and Caesar are conquered. O Adi bin Hatim, the Hour will not be established until a woman riding in a howdah sets out (alone) from al-Hirah - at that time Kufah had not yet been founded - and circumambulates this Ka'bah without any escort. O Adi bin Hatim, the Hour will not be established until a bag of wealth goes round (among the people); you will go round with it and find no one to accept it, so you will throw it on the ground and say: 'Would that you had never existed! Would that you were dust!'"
