It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Zayd al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came, and when he reached the midst of the houses of the Ansar, he noticed the smell (of meat being cooked). He said: "Who slaughtered this?" A man came out and said: O Messenger of Allah, today is a day on which a shortage of food is felt. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Do (the sacrifice) again." He said: By Allah, I have nothing except a young sheep less than a year old, or a lamb. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said three times: "Do it again." Then he said: "Then slaughter that, and (this) will not suffice for anyone after you."
