It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Zayd al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed among our houses and noticed the smell (of meat being cooked). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Who slaughtered this?" A man from among us came out and said: O Messenger of Allah, today was a day on which there was a shortage of food, so I slaughtered so that I could eat and also feed my neighbours. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Slaughter again." He said: No, by Allah, besides whom there is no true deity, I have nothing except a young sheep less than a year old, or a lamb. He said this three times. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then slaughter that, and a young animal will not suffice for anyone after you." He had slaughtered before the prayer.
