Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 14099 — Sayyiduna Amr bin Awf bin Milhah

It is narrated that Sayyiduna Amr bin Awf bin Milhah al-Muzani (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We went on campaign with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the year of the Conquest (of Makkah), and we were a thousand and some more. Allah granted us the conquest of Makkah and Hunayn, until, when we were between Hunayn and al-Ta'if, he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a tree on which weapons used to be hung. It was called 'Dhat Anwat', and it was worshipped besides Allah. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw it, on a hot day he turned away from it to a shade that was nearer than it. A man said: O Messenger of Allah, make for us a 'Dhat Anwat' just as these people have a Dhat Anwat. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "These are the ways (of the earlier nations). You have said the same thing, by the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, as the Children of Israel said to Musa (peace be upon him): 'Make for us a god just as they have gods.' He said: 'Shall I seek for you a god other than Allah, when He has favoured you over all the worlds?'"
