Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Ja'far (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates that when Abu Talib died, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) set out on foot to Ta'if. He (peace and blessings be upon him) invited them to Islam, but they did not respond to him, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned back. He came to the shade of a tree and prayed two rak'ahs, then said: "O Allah, to You alone I complain of my weakness, my lack of means and my lowliness in the eyes of people. O Most Merciful of those who show mercy, You are the Most Merciful of those who show mercy. To whom will You entrust me? To an enemy who will frown at me? Or to a relative whom You have given control over my affair? If You are not angry with me, then I do not care; yet Your well-being is more expansive for me. I seek refuge in the light of Your Face, by which the darknesses are illuminated and upon which the affair of this world and the Hereafter is set right, from Your sending down Your wrath upon me or Your displeasure descending upon me. To You belongs the seeking of Your pleasure until You are pleased, and there is no strength except through You."
