Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 13598 — We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man from the people of the desert came, wearing a cloak of sijan (a tailasan fabric) with buttons of silk brocade. He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) wants to raise up every horseman son of a horseman and to bring down every shepherd son of a shepherd. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of the collar of his cloak and said: "Upon him is the clothing of one who has no sense." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When death came to the Prophet of Allah Nuh (peace be upon him), he said to his son: 'O my son, I am giving you a bequest, I am laying the bequest before you: I command you to do two things and forbid you from two things. I command you to say La ilaha illallah, for if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed in one pan of the scale and La ilaha illallah in the other, it would outweigh them; and if the seven heavens and the seven earths were a closed ring, La ilaha illallah would crush them. And I enjoin you to say Subhan Allahi wa bihamdihi (Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him), for it is the prayer of the creation, and through it the creation is given provision. And I forbid you from disbelief and arrogance.'" Upon this a man said: O Messenger of Allah, disbelief we have come to know, but what is arrogance? Is it that a man has two fine sandals that he wears, and fine straps that please him? He said: "No." He said: Then is it that he has a fine suit of clothes that he wears? He said: "No." He said: Then is it that he has a beautiful horse whose beauty pleases him? He said: "No." He said: Then is it that he has companions who sit with him? He said: "No." He said: Then what is arrogance? He said: "To belittle the truth and to look down on people."
