Shaqiq bin Salamah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) met al-Walid bin Uqbah, and he (al-Walid) said: Why is it that I see you have turned away from the Commander of the Believers, Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him)? Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Convey to him that I did not stay behind from Badr. When this was conveyed to Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: "As for his saying, 'I did not stay behind from Badr,' I was nursing Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), until she passed away." And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) allotted me a share of the spoils as well, and whoever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) allotted a share to is as though he himself was present (in that battle).
