Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 13158 — the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked: How

حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْوَهَّابِ بْنِ نَجْدَةَ الْحَوْطِيُّ، ثنا أَبُو الْمُغِيرَةِ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ زَبْرٍ، حَدَّثَنِي سَالِمُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، قَالَ: سُئِلَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَيْفَ صَلَاةُ اللَّيْلِ؟ فَقَالَ: «مَثْنَى مَثْنَى، فَإِذَا خِفْتَ الصُّبْحَ فَأَوْتِرْ بِوَاحِدَةٍ»
Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: How should the night prayer be prayed? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Two rak'ahs at a time; then, when you fear the arrival of dawn, make witr with one rak'ah."
