Thabit bin Zayd al-Khawlani (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that he came to Madinah and met Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and asked him about wine. He said: I will tell you about wine. I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the mosque. While he (peace and blessings be upon him) was sitting with his knees drawn up, wrapped in his cloth, he (peace and blessings be upon him) undid his cloth, then said: "Whoever has any wine with him, let him inform me of it." So people began coming to him (peace and blessings be upon him). One would say: I have a large waterskin of wine. Another would say: I have a waterskin. Another would say: I have several waterskins, and whatever Allah willed that someone should have. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Gather it at such-and-such a place in al-Baqi', then inform me." The narrator said: Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and I stood up with him (peace and blessings be upon him). I walked on his (peace and blessings be upon him) right side while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was leaning on me. Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) caught up with us, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of me and placed me on his left side and put Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) in my place. Then Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) caught up with us, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of him and placed him on his left side. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) walked between the two of them until, when he reached the wine, he said to the people: "Do you recognise this?" They said: Yes, O Messenger of Allah, this is wine. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have spoken the truth. Allah has cursed wine, the one who presses it, the one for whom it is pressed, the one who drinks it, the one who serves it, and the one who consumes its price." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called for a knife and said: "Sharpen it." So that was done. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took it and slit open the waterskins. The people said: There is benefit in these waterskins! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, but I am doing this only out of anger for the sake of Allah, because of the displeasure of Allah that is in it." The narrator said: Some of the narrators add to the hadith beyond others.
