Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I spent the night at the house of my maternal aunt, Sayyidah Maymunah (may Allah be pleased with her). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) got up startled (awakening), asked for water and performed ablution. Then he recited: "Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth" [Surah al-Baqarah: 164] to the end of the surah. Then he began Surah al-Baqarah and recited it letter by letter until he completed it. Then he bowed and said: "Subhana rabbiya al-'azim (Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent)", then he prostrated and said: "Subhana rabbiya al-a'la (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High)". Then he raised his head and said between the two prostrations: "'Rabbi ighfir li, warhamni, wajburni, warfa'ni, warzuqni, wahdini' (My Lord, forgive me, have mercy on me, make up what I lack, raise me, provide for me and guide me)." Then he stood and in the second rak'ah recited Surah Al Imran to its end, then bowed and prostrated, and did as he had done in the first rak'ah. Then he lay down, then got up startled and did as he had done in the first two rak'ahs, reciting letter by letter, until he had prayed eight rak'ahs, lying down after every two rak'ahs. Then he prayed three rak'ahs of witr, then prayed the two rak'ahs of Fajr, and then said: "O Allah, place light in my soul, place light in my heart, place light in my sight, place light in my hearing, place light in front of me, place light behind me, place light on my right, place light on my left, place light beneath me, place light above me, and make light great for me."
