Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 1208 — Sayyiduna Umar appointed Sayyiduna Bishr

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed Sayyiduna Bishr bin Asim (may Allah be pleased with him) as collector of the charity (sadaqah) of Hawazin, but Bishr (may Allah be pleased with him) delayed in going. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) met him and said: What has held you back? Do we not have the right to be listened to and obeyed by you? He said: Certainly, but I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever is put in charge of any affair of the Muslims will be brought on the Day of Resurrection until he is made to stand upon the bridge over Hell. If he was a doer of good, he will pass over; and if he was a wrongdoer, the bridge will give way beneath him and he will fall into it for seventy years."
(The narrator) said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went out grieved and troubled, and Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) met him and said: What is the matter? I see you grieved and troubled. He said: What could keep me from being grieved and troubled, when I have heard Bishr bin Asim say: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever is put in charge of any affair of the Muslims will be brought on the Day of Resurrection until he is made to stand upon the bridge over Hell. If he was a doer of good, he will pass over; and if he was a wrongdoer, the bridge will give way beneath him and he will fall into it for seventy years." Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: And did you not hear it from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) yourself? He said: No. Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I bear witness that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Whoever is put in charge of anyone among the people will be brought on the Day of Resurrection until he is made to stand upon the bridge over Hell. If he was a doer of good, he will pass over; and if he was a wrongdoer, the bridge will give way beneath him and he will fall into it for seventy years, and it is black and dark." So which of the two hadiths pains your heart more? Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Both of them have pained my heart. So who will take it on with all that it carries? And Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "One whose nose Allah has rubbed in the dust and whose cheek He has pressed to the ground. As for us, we know nothing of you but good, yet it may be that if you entrust it to someone who does not act justly in it, you will not escape its sin."
