Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The husband of Barirah (may Allah be pleased with her) was a black slave called Mughith. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: I used to see him in the streets of Madinah wiping his eyes (as he wept). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave four rulings concerning her: her masters had stipulated the wala' (right of inheritance through emancipation) for themselves, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ruled: "The wala' belongs only to the one who sets free." He gave her the choice, and she chose herself; he ordered her to observe the waiting period (iddah); and charity had been given to her, and she gifted some of it to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her). Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about it, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is charity for her and a gift for us."
