Mu'jam Kabir Tabarani 11670 — regarding this verse: O you who believe!

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَبَّاسِ، مَوْلَى بَنِي هَاشِمٍ، ثنا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ صَالِحٍ الْعِجْلِيُّ، ثنا إِسْرَائِيلُ، عَنْ سِمَاكِ بْنِ حَرْبٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، فِي هَذِهِ الْآيَةِ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنَّ مِنْ أَزْوَاجِكُمْ وَأَوْلَادِكُمْ عَدُوًّا لَكُمْ فَاحْذَرُوهُمْ} [التغابن: ١٤] قَالَ: " هَؤُلَاءِ رِجَالٌ أَسْلَمُوا مِنْ أَهْلِ مَكَّةَ فَأَرَادُوا أَنْ يَأْتُوا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ، فَلَمَّا أَتَوْا رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وفَقِهُوا فِي الدِّينِ أَرَادُوا أَنْ يُعَاقِبُوهُمْ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ {يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنَّ مِنْ أَزْوَاجِكُمْ وَأَوْلَادِكُمْ عَدُوًّا لَكُمْ فَاحْذَرُوهُمْ وَإِنْ تَعْفُوا وتَصْفَحُوا وتَغْفِرُوا فَإِنَّ اللهَ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ} [التغابن: ١٤] "
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says regarding this verse: "O you who believe! Indeed, among your wives and your children are enemies to you, so beware of them" [Surah al-Taghabun: 14]. He said: "These were people of Makkah who had accepted Islam and wanted to come to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then when they came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and gained understanding of the religion, they intended to punish them (their families). So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: O you who believe! Indeed, among your wives and your children are enemies to you, so beware of them. And if you pardon, overlook and forgive, then indeed Allah is Forgiving, Merciful."
