It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, created this city (Makkah) on the day He created the heavens and the earth, and He fashioned it (in its sanctity) when He fashioned the sun and the moon; and whatever is above it in the sky is also sacred. It was not made lawful for anyone before me, and for me too it was made lawful only for an hour of a day; then it returned to its former state." Then it was said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): Khalid bin al-Walid is killing (people). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O so-and-so, get up, go to Khalid bin al-Walid and tell him to withhold his hand from killing." The man went to him and said: The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) says: "Kill whomever you can overpower." So he killed seventy people. Then this was reported to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for Khalid and said: "Did I not forbid you from killing?" He said: So-and-so came to me and ordered me to kill whomever I could overpower. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent for that (man): "Did I not command you?" He said: You wanted one thing and Allah wanted another, and the command of Allah prevailed over your command, and I could do nothing other than what happened. So the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent about it and gave him no reply.
