Sayyiduna Jabir and Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) narrate: We came with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), intending nothing but Hajj, so we entered ihram for Hajj. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed tawaf on his mount, touching the Black Stone with a staff he had with him. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards the Zamzam drinking place and said: "Draw (water) from it for me." So they drew a bucket for him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) took a sip, rinsed his mouth, then spat it into the bucket, and then said: "Pour it back into it (the well)." Then he said: "O Banu Hashim, you are engaged in a righteous deed. Were it not for the fear that you would be overpowered in it, or that it would be taken as a Sunnah, I too would have joined you (in this work)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) came to his lodging, addressed the Companions and said: "Indeed, Umrah has entered into your Hajj, so come out of ihram, except the one who has a hady (sacrificial animal) with him." And he said: "Had I not had a hady with me, I too would have done as you do (and come out of ihram)." Then Suraqah bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah, is this only for this year of ours or forever? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, forever." They liked it when their practice coincided with the practice of the people of the Jahiliyyah, and the people of the Jahiliyyah used to say: When the month of Safar has passed, the hair (of the riding animals) has grown back, and the sores have healed, then Umrah becomes permissible for whoever wishes to perform Umrah.
