Abu al-Tufayl said: I said to Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed raml (in the circumambulation) of the House, and so it is a Sunnah. He said: They spoke both truth and falsehood. I said: What truth did they speak, and what falsehood? He said: They spoke the truth that he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed raml, and they spoke falsely that it is a Sunnah. Quraysh had said: Leave Muhammad and his companions at al-Hudaybiyah until they die the death of (camels infested with) nose-worms. Then when they made peace with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the condition that they would come the following year and stay in Makkah for three days, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came the following year, while the polytheists were watching from the direction of Qu'ayqi'an. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his Companions: "Circumambulate the House with raml" - and it is not a Sunnah. I said: Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went between al-Safa and al-Marwah on a camel, and that this is a Sunnah. He said: They spoke both truth and falsehood. I said: What truth did they speak, and what falsehood? He said: The truth is that he (peace and blessings be upon him) did go between them on a camel, and the falsehood is (that it is a Sunnah); it is not a Sunnah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would not drive people away from himself, nor would they be beaten away from him, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) went between them on a camel so that the people could hear his (peace and blessings be upon him) words and see his (peace and blessings be upon him) place, while their hands could not reach him (peace and blessings be upon him). I said: Your people claim that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) went (sa'i) between al-Safa and al-Marwah, and that this is a Sunnah. He said: They spoke the truth. When Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was commanded with the rites of Hajj, Satan confronted him at the place of the Sa'i and raced him, and Ibrahim (peace be upon him) outran him. Then Jibril (peace be upon him) took him to Jamrat al-Aqabah, and Satan confronted him, so he threw seven pebbles at him until he went away. Then he confronted him at the middle Jamrah, so he threw seven pebbles at him until he went away. Then he laid Isma'il (peace be upon him) down on his forehead, and Isma'il (peace be upon him) was wearing a white shirt. He said: O my father, there is no (other) shirt, so (take it off and) shroud me in it. Then Ibrahim (peace be upon him) turned and found a large-eyed, white, horned ram, and he slaughtered it. Then Jibril (peace be upon him) took him to the farthest Jamrah, and Satan confronted him, so he threw seven pebbles at him until he went away. Then he took him to Mina and said: This is al-Mash'ar al-Haram. Then he took him to Arafah. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Do you know why it was named Arafah? I said: Why was it named so? He said: Jibril (peace be upon him) asked Ibrahim (peace be upon him): Have you come to know (arafta)? He said: Yes. Then Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Do you know how the Talbiyah began? I said: How did the Talbiyah begin? He said: When Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was commanded to proclaim the Hajj among the people, the mountains lowered their heads for him and the towns were raised up for him, and he proclaimed the Hajj among the people.
