حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو حَبِيبٍ يَحْيَى بْنُ نَافِعٍ الْمِصْرِيُّ، ثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ، أنا يَحْيَى بْنُ أَيُّوبَ، ثنا عُبَيْدُ اللهِ بْنُ زَحْرٍ، عَنِ الْأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ زِرِّ بْنِ حُبَيْشٍ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ: احْتَبَسَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ لَيْلَةٍ، كَانَ عِنْدَ بَعْضِ أَهْلِهِ أَوْ نِسَائِهِ، فَلَمْ يَأْتِنَا لِصَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ الْآخِرَةِ حَتَّى ذَهَبَ اللَّيْلُ، فَجَاءَنَا وَمِنَّا الْمُصَلِّي وَمِنَّا الْمُضْطَجِعُ، فَبَشَّرَنَا، وَقَالَ: «إِنَّهُ لَا يُصَلِّي هَذِهِ الصَّلَاةَ أَحَدٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ» ، فَنَزَلَتْ {لَيْسُوا سَوَاءً مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ أُمَّةٌ قَائِمَةٌ يَتْلُونَ آيَاتِ اللهِ آنَاءَ اللَّيْلِ وَهُمْ يَسْجُدُونَ} [آل عمران: ١١٣]
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was held back one night; he (peace and blessings be upon him) was with one of his family or his wives, and he did not come to us for the Isha prayer until a large part of the night had passed. Then he came to us while some of us were praying and some were lying down. He gave us glad tidings and said: "None of the People of the Book offers this prayer." Then this verse was revealed: "They are not all alike; among the People of the Book is a community standing (upright in religion), reciting the verses of Allah during the hours of the night and prostrating" [Surah Al Imran: 113].
