It is narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him): "An army of the Muslims set out, of which I was the commander, until we encamped at Alexandria. One of their great chiefs said: 'Send me a man so that I may talk with him and he may speak with me.' I said: 'No one but me will go to him.' So I went out with an interpreter of mine, and he too had his interpreter with him, until two pulpits were set up for us. He asked: 'Who are you people?' We replied: 'We are Arabs, inhabitants of a barren land of thorny bushes and acacia, and we are the people of the House of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic. We were the most constrained of people in land and in the worst state of life; we would even eat carrion and blood, and one group of us would raid another. We were living the worst life that people have lived, until a man appeared among us who at that time was neither the greatest of us in family honour nor the richest of us in wealth. He said: I am the Messenger of Allah to you. He would command us to do things we did not know, and forbid us from the things that we and our forefathers had been upon. We spoke ill of him, belied him and rejected his words, until people of a nation other than ours came to him and said: We affirm you, believe in you, will follow you, and will fight whoever fights you. So he went to them; then we went out against them and fought them, and they killed us, overwhelmed us and subdued us. Then they turned to the Arabs near them and fought them until they prevailed over them too. Now, if the Arabs I have left behind me came to know of this luxurious life of yours, not a single one would remain who would not come here to become your partner in this prosperity.' On hearing this the chief laughed and then said: 'Your Messenger has certainly spoken the truth. Our messengers too came to us with teachings like those your Messenger brought, and we adhered to them, until kings appeared among us who began to rule us according to their own desires and abandoned the way of the prophets. So as long as you hold fast to the command brought by your Prophet, whoever fights you, you will overcome him, and whoever you confront, you will triumph over him. But when you begin to do as we did, that is, you put your Prophet's command behind your backs and follow your desires like those (kings), then the matter between us and you will be left even, and then you will be neither more numerous than us nor stronger than us.'" Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "I have never seen a sharper and more astute man than him."

Musa bin Ulayy bin Rabah narrates from his father that he said: "When the people of Alexandria blocked the advance of Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) and opposed him, he set up a catapult (manjaniq) against that city."
Imam al-Harith bin Abi Usamah recorded this narration in his Musnad.
