It is narrated from Sayyiduna Suraqah bin Malik al-Mudliji (may Allah be pleased with him) that Quraysh had fixed forty uqiyah (as a reward) for (the capture of) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Suraqah relates: While I was sitting, a man suddenly came to me and said: "Those two men for whom Quraysh have fixed a reward have just passed near you at such-and-such a place." Suraqah says: (Hearing this,) I went to my horse, which was in the pasture, and drove it back; then I took up my spear and mounted the horse. He says: I began to drag my spear (along the ground) for fear that the people of the settlement would share the reward with me. When I saw the two of them, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "(O Messenger of Allah,) this pursuer has caught up with us." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned (towards me) and supplicated: 'Allahumma-kfinahu bima shi'ta' (O Allah, suffice us against his harm in whatever way You will). Suraqah says: (Through the blessing of this supplication) my horse sank (into the ground), although I was on a hard stretch of land; I fell onto a stone and was thrown on my face. I said: "Pray to the One who has done what I see, that He set my horse free" (and he made a covenant that he would never disobey him). So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for him, and the horse came out of the ground. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Will you give it up (i.e. your enmity or pursuit) for my sake?" He said: "Yes." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "From here, keep people misled about us (so that they do not follow us)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) took the coastal route along the sea. Suraqah says: At the beginning of the day I was their pursuer (an enemy), and at the end of the day I became a guard (protector) for them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had said: "When we have settled in Madinah, and you wish to come to us, then come." So when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah, and he gained victory at Badr and Uhud, and the people around accepted Islam, Suraqah says: News reached me that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to send Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) to Banu Mudlij, so I came to him. Then he mentioned the long hadith that has already passed in the commentary on Surah al-Nisa'.
Al-Harith also narrated this hadith at length in the same way, through Bishr bin Umar al-Zahrani from Hammad bin Salamah. Imam Bukhari also narrated this hadith through other chains from Sayyiduna Suraqah (may Allah be pleased with him); however, its wording differs from this in some places.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qays bin al-Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) set out (at the time of the Hijrah) to hide in the cave, they passed by a slave who was grazing goats. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him for milk to drink, and he said: By Allah, I have no goat that can be milked, except this young she-goat which conceived at the start of winter, but now its milk has completely dried up and it is emaciated. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring it to us." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) supplicated for blessing upon it, and milked it into a large wooden bowl, then gave Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to drink; then he milked again and gave the shepherd his fill; then he milked more and drank himself (peace and blessings be upon him). The slave asked in amazement: By Allah, who are you? I have never seen anyone like you (so full of blessing). He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What do you think, if I tell you, will you keep my secret?" He said: Yes. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed I am Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and I am the Messenger of Allah." He said: Are you the one about whom Quraysh claim that you have abandoned your religion? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, that is what they say." He said: I bear witness that you are truly the Messenger of Allah, and that what you have brought is the truth, and that what you have done, only a prophet can do. Then he said: Shall I come with you now? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Not now; not until you hear that we have prevailed. When that news reaches you, then come out (to us)." So he came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) (in Madinah) after the event of the cave.
Imam Abu Ya'la narrated it in his Musnad; the narrators of its chain are thiqat (trustworthy), and this narration is strong on the basis of other supporting reports (shawahid).
