It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was commanded to build the House of Allah, he became very anxious (about its extent and manner) and could not understand how to build it. Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, sent down «al-sakinah», which was a swift wind «rihun khajuj». That wind formed a ring like a shield over the site of the House of Allah, and he began building upon that (marked foundation). Each day he would build one course of the wall, while Makkah was intensely hot. When Ibrahim (peace be upon him) reached the place of the Black Stone, he said to Isma'il (peace be upon him): "Go and search for a stone and bring it." Isma'il (peace be upon him) began searching for a stone in the mountains, and Jibril (peace be upon him) descended with the Black Stone. When Isma'il (peace be upon him) returned, he asked (on seeing the stone): "Where has this come from?" Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said: "It has come from the One who does not rely on my labour and yours." Then he set it in place.
(Mentioning the youth of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said:) He (peace and blessings be upon him) had a cloth brought, spread it out and placed the Black Stone in it. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called one man from each people (tribe) and ordered them to take hold of a corner of the cloth each and lift it up. When they had lifted it, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took hold of it and set it in place (with his blessed hand).
In the narration of Imam al-Tayalisi, it is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the structure of the House of Allah collapsed after (the time of) Banu Jurhum, Quraysh rebuilt it. When they intended to set the Black Stone in place, they quarrelled over who would place it. Then they agreed that whoever entered first through this gate would decide. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered through the Gate of Banu Shaybah. He (peace and blessings be upon him) had a sheet brought, placed the Black Stone in its middle and ordered every clan (tribe) to take hold of a corner of the sheet. When they lifted it, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set it in place (in the wall).
In the narration of Imam Abu Bakr, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says that when Quraysh wanted to lift the Black Stone, they disputed over it. They decided: "The first man who comes out of this lane will judge between us." The narrator says: The first to appear before them was the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then they placed the Black Stone in a woollen sheet, and all the tribes together lifted it. On that day the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was a young man, that is, this incident was before his (peace and blessings be upon him) prophetic mission.
In the narration of Imam al-Harith, a man said to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): "Tell me about the building of the House of Allah." He said: Allah Almighty revealed to Ibrahim (peace be upon him): "Build a house for Me." Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was troubled by this responsibility, so Allah Almighty sent a wind called «al-sakinah» and «al-khajuj»; it had a head and two eyes. Allah revealed to Ibrahim (peace be upon him): "Wherever this wind moves, move with it, and wherever it stops, you also stop there." The wind kept moving until it stopped at the site of the House of Allah and encircled it like a shield. This site is exactly opposite the heavenly «al-Bayt al-Ma'mur», which seventy thousand angels enter every day, and whoever leaves it once does not return to it again until the Day of Resurrection. Then Ibrahim and Isma'il (peace be upon them both) would build one course each day, and when the heat grew intense, they would rest in the shade of the mountain. When they reached the place of the Black Stone, Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said to Isma'il (peace be upon him): "Bring me a stone so that I may set it here, to be a sign for the people." Isma'il (peace be upon him) went towards the valley and brought a stone, but Ibrahim (peace be upon him) considered it too small, rejected it and said: "Bring me another stone besides this one." Isma'il (peace be upon him) had only just gone when Jibril (peace be upon him) descended with the Black Stone. When Isma'il (peace be upon him) returned, Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said: "The One has brought me a stone who has not left me in need of the stone you brought." Then he built the House of Allah, and the circumambulation and prayer there began, until they passed away and their line came to an end. Then, when the building collapsed, the people of the Amalekites built it, and they too kept circumambulating it until they also came to an end. Then Quraysh built it, and when they reached the place of the Black Stone, they disagreed and decided: "Whoever appears first from the gate will decide."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Tufayl (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the time of Ignorance the Ka'bah had been built merely by placing stones one upon another (without mortar), with no clay used in it. Its height was so low that a young goat could leap up onto it. It was not an imposing building; rather, coverings were merely placed over it and left hanging down. The Black Stone was placed on the wall of the Ka'bah, fully exposed, and the House of Allah had (only) two corners, like a ring; that is, it was rectangular (square) on one side and rounded on the other. Then a ship came from the land of the Romans (Byzantium), and when it reached near Jeddah, it broke apart and was wrecked. Quraysh went out to obtain its timber and found a Roman man there. They took the timber from him, and he gave it to them. That ship was heading for Abyssinia, and that Roman was a merchant. Quraysh brought the timber and that Roman to Makkah and said: "We will build the House of our Lord with this timber." When they intended to demolish it, suddenly a snake with a white belly and a black back appeared on the wall of the House of Allah. Whenever anyone came near to demolish the House of Allah or remove one of its stones, it would lunge at him with its mouth open. Quraysh gathered at the Station of Ibrahim, cried out humbly to Allah and said: «Rabbana lam tura'» "O our Lord, we do not wish to frighten or displease You; we only intended the glorification and adornment of Your House. So if You are pleased, well and good; otherwise, do whatever You will." Then they heard a reply (a voice) from the sky, and suddenly a bird appeared, larger than an eagle, with a black back and a white belly and white feet. It drove its talons into the belly of the snake and carried it off, dragging it while its tail hung down, until it took it towards Jiyad. Then Quraysh demolished the House of Allah and began rebuilding it with the stones of the valley, which they carried on their necks, and they raised it twenty cubits high. Meanwhile the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was also carrying stones from Ajyad, wearing a striped wrapper (namirah). Because the wrapper was narrow, when it came up onto his (peace and blessings be upon him) shoulder, part of his private area began to be exposed. Then a call came: "O Muhammad, cover your private parts!" After this he (peace and blessings be upon him) was never seen naked. Between this building of the Ka'bah and the coming down of revelation there was a gap of fifteen years. Then, when the army of al-Husayn bin Numayr came, the narrator mentioned the burning of the Ka'bah in the time of Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both).
Ibn Khuthaym says: Ibn Sabit told me that when Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) built it and they dug up the foundations, they found stones there interlocked with one another like links; if a pickaxe was struck on one side, the stone on the other side would also move.
Ibn Sabit says: Zayd showed me those foundations after the Isha prayer on a moonlit night; they were joined to one another like the links of a chain.
Ma'mar says: Yazid bin Abi Ziyad told me, on the authority of Mujahid, that when the House of Allah was demolished in the time of Ignorance and they reached the corner (rukn), a snake came out whose neck was like the neck of a camel. The people were afraid, and then a bird came and cast its shadow over half of Makkah; it seized the snake and threw it into the sea.
Mujahid says: Once a man pulled out a stone of the House of Allah and stole some of the ornaments that were there. When he came back to steal again, that stone stuck to his head.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates from his father, Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), that he stated: "When Quraysh were building the Ka'bah, we were carrying stones to the House of Allah. The men would carry the stones and the women were transporting «al-shid», that is, mortar; «al-shid» is the clay or mixture that is filled in between the large stones (during construction)." Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "My nephew Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and I were carrying stones together. We would place the stones on our necks and (to protect ourselves from the stones' chafing) we would take off our waist-wrappers and put them under the stones; then, when people came into view, we would put our waist-wrappers back on. Meanwhile, Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and I were together and he was walking in front of me, when suddenly he (peace and blessings be upon him) fell and lay face down. I ran to him and saw that he (peace and blessings be upon him) had his eyes fixed on the sky. I asked: 'What has happened to you?' He (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and tied his waist-wrapper. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'I have been forbidden from walking about naked.'" Sayyiduna al-Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: "I kept this incident hidden from the people so that they would not think it was (Allah forbid) madness."
This hadith is narrated in Musnad Abi Ya'la (4221). Its chain contains Yahya bin al-Ala al-Bajali, who is da'if (weak); however, the basis of this incident is established in Sahih al-Bukhari (364) and Sahih Muslim (340) through the narration of Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both), in which it is mentioned that on this occasion he (peace and blessings be upon him) fell down unconscious and after that was never seen naked.
