It is narrated from Tariq bin Shihab that when Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him) was martyred, Sayyidah Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) said: "Today Islam (its foundations) has been weakened."
Qabisah bin Uqbah transmitted this report from Sufyan, from Qays.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the murderous attack was made on Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), we came to him while he was saying: "Do not be hasty in the matter of this man (the assailant). If I survive, I will decide about him by my own judgement, and if I die, then the matter is in your hands." The people said: O Commander of the Believers, by Allah, he (the assailant) has already been killed and cut to pieces. So he recited: 'Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un' (We belong to Allah and to Him we return), then said: "Woe to you! Who is he (the assailant)?" The people told him that he was Abu Lu'lu'ah, so he said: 'Allahu akbar' (Allah is the Greatest). Then he looked at his son Abdullah and said: "O my dear son, what kind of father have I been to you?" He said: You have been the best of fathers. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Then I adjure you to lift me and keep hold of me until you lay my cheek on the ground, so that death comes to me in the state in which a humble servant dies." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O my father, by Allah, this is very hard on me. He said: "Get up, and do not argue with me." The narrator said: So he got up, lifted him and laid his cheek on the ground. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Abdullah, I adjure you by the right of Allah Almighty and the right of Umar: when I die and you have buried me, do not wash your head until you have sold from the properties of the family of Umar for eighty thousand (dirhams) and deposited it in the public treasury of the Muslims." On hearing this, Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him), who was at his head, said: O Commander of the Believers, what is the worth of these eighty thousand? You have (by demanding so large a sum) put your household, or the family of Umar, into hardship. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Leave me alone, O Ibn Awf." Then he looked at his son Abdullah and said: "O my son, thirty-two thousand (dirhams more) are what I spent during my caliphate on performing twelve Hajj pilgrimages and on the needs of the delegations and envoys who used to come to me from the various cities." Then Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: O Commander of the Believers, be of good cheer and think well of Allah Almighty, for there is none of us Muhajirun who has not taken from the fay' (spoils gained without fighting) just as you have taken, which Allah Almighty has made lawful for us; and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away while he was pleased with you, and you have the merits of precedence in faith in his (peace and blessings be upon him) company. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Ibn Awf, Umar's wish is that he come out of it (the responsibilities of the caliphate) just as (unstained as) he entered it. My wish is that when I meet Allah Almighty, you will not be demanding anything of me, little or much."
Thumamah, a narrator of this report, has been criticised by Ali bin al-Madini and other imams; moreover, the accounts of the martyrdom of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) found in the two Sahihs do not contain most of the details of the story mentioned here.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) that Abu Lu'lu'ah was a slave of Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him), and he used to make millstones. Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him) used to take four dirhams from him every day as kharaj (a share of his earnings). Once Abu Lu'lu'ah met Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "O Commander of the Believers! Mughirah has placed a very heavy burden of kharaj upon me; speak to him so that he reduces it for me." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Fear Allah Almighty and be good to your master," while Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) intended to meet Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) and intercede for him to lighten his burden. But the slave became angry and said: "His justice embraces all people except me." So he resolved to kill him, and he made a two-headed dagger, sharpened it well and poisoned it. Then he brought it to al-Hurmuzan and asked: "What do you think of this?" He said: "I think that whomever you strike with it, you will surely kill." Then Abu Lu'lu'ah waited for an opportunity, and he came at the time of the morning prayer until he stood behind Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). It was the practice of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the iqamah for the prayer was called, he would speak, saying: "Straighten your rows." So on that day too he began saying what he always used to say. Then, when he said the takbir of the prayer, Abu Lu'lu'ah stabbed him in his shoulder and in his side, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) fell. With his dagger he also wounded thirteen more men, of whom seven died and six were injured. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was carried and taken to his house, and agitation spread among the people until the sun was about to rise. Then Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) called out: "O people! The prayer, the prayer!" So the people turned to the prayer, and Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) went forward and led them in prayer with the two shortest surahs of the Qur'an. When they had finished the prayer, they went towards Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). He called for something to drink so that he could gauge the depth of the wound. He was given nabidh; he drank it and it came out of his wound, and the people could not tell whether it was nabidh or blood. Then he called for milk and drank it, and it too came out of the wound. The people said: "O Commander of the Believers! No harm will come to you (there is nothing to worry about)." He said: "If being killed is a harm, then I have indeed been killed." Then the people began to praise him, and he said: "Despite what you are saying, my wish was that I should leave this world with my account even, neither owing anyone nor anyone having a claim upon me, and that my companionship with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) should remain safe for me." At this Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "No, by Allah! You will not leave here merely even (rather, your rank is very high)." Then he mentioned the full account. The narrator says: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to find comfort in the words of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), so he said: "Repeat what you said." He repeated the same words to him, and he said: "Despite what you are saying, if I had gold to the extent of the earth, I would give it as a ransom to be saved from the terror of that scene of the Hereafter."
Ibn Hibban narrated it at length from Abu Ya'la, while its origin is found briefly in Sahih Bukhari and Muslim, but most of this wording is not mentioned there.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he picked up a straw (from the ground) and (out of his intense fear of Allah) said: "My wish is that I were this (straw), and my longing is that my mother had never given birth to me, and that I were 'a thing utterly forgotten' [Surah Maryam: 23], that is, 'something forgotten completely, with not even a name or trace of it remaining.'"
In the chain of this athar, Asim bin Ubaydullah is a weak narrator; however, words of this kind from Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him), reflecting fear of Allah and concern for the Hereafter, are also narrated in other reliable athar.

Aban bin Uthman (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father (Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him)) that he heard Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) saying (at the time of his death): "Woe and ruin to me, and woe to my mother, if Allah Almighty does not forgive me." He repeated these words three times, then he passed away, and there was no further speech after these words.
Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal narrated this athar in 'Fada'il al-Sahabah' (721); the narrator Asim bin Ubaydullah in its chain is weak. However, Sayyiduna Umar's (may Allah be pleased with him) expression of extreme humility and fear of Allah at the time of his death is also established by other authentic narrations and athar.
