قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ : أَخْبَرَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ أَيُّوبَ الضَّبِّيُّ ، ثَنَا أَبُو حَمْزَةَ السُّكَّرِيُّ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، عَنْ عَامِرٍ قَالَ : قَالَ زَيْدُ بْنُ ثَابِتٍ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ - : كُنْتُ أَكْتُبُ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ وَرَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يُمِلُّهَا : وَلَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الإِنْسَانَ مِنْ سُلالَةٍ مِنْ طِينٍ حَتَّى بَلَغَ : ثُمَّ أَنْشَأْنَاهُ خَلْقًا آخَرَ فَقَالَ مُعَاذُ بْنُ جَبَلٍ - رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ - : فَتَبَارَكَ اللهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ . فَضَحِكَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ لَهُ : لِمَ ضَحِكْتَ ؟ فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : إِنَّ هَذِهِ الْآيَةَ خُتِمَتْ بِمَا تَقُولُ : فَتَبَارَكَ اللهُ أَحْسَنُ الْخَالِقِينَ .
جَابِرٌ هُوَ الْجُعْفِيُّ ضَعِيفٌ .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "I was writing this verse while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was dictating it to me: 'And We have certainly created man from an extract of clay' [Surah al-Mu'minun: 12], until, when he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached this point: 'Then We produced him as another creation' [Surah al-Mu'minun: 14], Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) said (spontaneously): 'So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.' At this the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) smiled, and he said: 'O Messenger of Allah! Why did you smile?' He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Indeed, this verse ends with the very words you have just said: So blessed is Allah, the best of creators.'"

وَقَالَ ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ : حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدٍ الشَّافِعِيُّ ، ثَنَا الْفُضَيْلُ بْنُ عِيَاضٍ قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ الثَّوْرِيَّ ، يَقُولُ فِي قَوْلِهِ تَعَالَى : رَبَّنَا غَلَبَتْ عَلَيْنَا شِقْوَتُنَا قَالَ : الْقَضَاءُ .
It is narrated from Ibn Abi Umar that Fudayl bin Iyad heard Sufyan al-Thawri say concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: "Our Lord, our wretchedness overcame us" [Surah al-Mu'minun: 106], that what is meant by these words, "Our Lord, our wretchedness overcame us," is the decree of Allah Almighty (that is, the settled decision of predestination).
