قَالَ إِسْحَاقُ : أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ آدَمَ ، ثَنَا أَبُو زُبَيْدٍ وَاسْمُهُ عَبْثَرٌ ، عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ الْمُسَيِّبِ ، عَنْ فُضَيْلِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : إِنَّهُ سُئِلَ عَنْ فَاتِحَةِ الْكِتَابِ ، وَقَالَ : حَدَّثَنَا نَبِيُّ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ تَغَيَّرَ لَوْنُهُ وَرَدَّدَهَا سَاعَةً حِينَ ذَكَرَ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ : إِنَّهَا أُنْزِلَتْ مِنْ كَنْزٍ مِنْ تَحْتِ الْعَرْشِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he was asked about Fatihat al-Kitab (Surah al-Fatihah), and he said: "The Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated to us"; then (as soon as he mentioned the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)) the colour of his face changed, and when he mentioned the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) he kept repeating it for a while (some time). Then he said: "It (Surah al-Fatihah) was sent down from a special treasure beneath the Throne."

قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ ، أَنَا يُونُسُ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سِيرِينَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : السَّبْعُ الْمَثَانِي فَاتِحَةُ الْكِتَابِ

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said (concerning a term of the Noble Qur'an): "The Seven Oft-Repeated (al-Sab' al-Mathani) [Surah al-Hijr: 87] means Fatihat al-Kitab (Surah al-Fatihah)."
Yunus said that Imam al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) also used to say the same.

وَقَالَ إِسْحَاقُ : أَخْبَرَنَا رَوْحُ بْنُ عُبَادَةَ ، أَنَا مَالِكٌ ، عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ قَالَ : إِنَّ أَبَا سَعِيدٍ مَوْلَى عَامِرِ ابْنِ كُرَيْزٍ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ دَعَا أُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ وَهُوَ يُصَلِّي فِي الْمَسْجِدِ فَالْتَفَتَ إِلَيْهِ ، فَلَمَّا صَلَّى لَحِقَهُ فَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ فِي يَدِهِ فَقَالَ : " أَرْجُو أَلَّا تَخْرُجَ مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ حَتَّى تَعْلَمَ سُورَةً مَا أَنْزَلَ اللهُ تَعَالَى فِي التَّوْرَاةِ وَلَا فِي الْإِنْجِيلِ مِثْلَهَا " . قَالَ : فَجَعَلْتُ أُبْطِئُ فِي الْمَشْيِ رَجَاءَ أَنْ يَذْكُرَ ذَلِكَ ، فَقُلْتُ : الَّذِي وَعَدْتَنِي يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ؟ فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا تَقْرَأُ إِذَا اسْتَفْتَحْتَ الصَّلَاةَ ؟ " فَقُلْتُ : الْحَمْدُ لِلهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ حَتَّى أَتَيْتُ عَلَى آخِرِ السُّورَةِ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ " هِيَ السَّبْعُ الْمَثَانِي وَالْقُرْآنُ الْعَظِيمُ الَّذِي أُعْطِيتُ "
هَذَا مُرْسَلٌ صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ
وَلَكِنِ اخْتُلِفَ فِيهِ عَلَى الْعَلَاءِ فَرَوَاهُ الدَّرَاوَرْدِيُّ عَنْهُ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَجَ عَلَى أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ

3518 \ 2 - وَرَوَاهُ عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، عَنِ اللهِ عَنْهُ قَالَ : فَذَكَرَهُ .
أَخْرَجَهُ ابْنُ حِبَّانَ وَالْحَاكِمُ .
هَذَا مُرْسَلٌ صَحِيحُ الْإِسْنَادِ
وَلَكِنِ اخْتُلِفَ فِيهِ عَلَى الْعَلَاءِ فَرَوَاهُ الدَّرَاوَرْدِيُّ عَنْهُ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ خَرَجَ عَلَى أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ

3518 \ 2 - وَرَوَاهُ عَبْدُ الْحَمِيدِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنِ الْعَلَاءِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، عَنْ أُبَيِّ بْنِ كَعْبٍ ، عَنِ اللهِ عَنْهُ قَالَ : فَذَكَرَهُ .
أَخْرَجَهُ ابْنُ حِبَّانَ وَالْحَاكِمُ .
It is narrated from Abu Sa'id (may Allah have mercy on him), the freed slave (mawla) of Amir bin Kurayz, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was praying in the mosque. He turned towards him (peace and blessings be upon him), and when he had finished the prayer he came to him (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) took his hand in his blessed hand and said: "I strongly hope that you will not leave the mosque until you know a surah the like of which, in greatness, Allah Almighty has not sent down in the Torah nor in the Injil." Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I deliberately began to walk slowly (as I was leaving), hoping that he (peace and blessings be upon him) would mention it. So I said: O Messenger of Allah! The surah you promised me? He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What do you recite when you begin the prayer?" I said: All praise is for Allah, the Lord of the worlds [Surah al-Fatihah: 2], until I had completed the surah. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This is the Seven Oft-Repeated (al-Sab' al-Mathani, the seven verses repeated again and again) and the Mighty Qur'an that I have been given."
This narration is mursal and its chain is sahih (authentic), but there is a disagreement about it concerning the narrator al-Ala'. Al-Darawardi narrated it from al-Ala', from his father, from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came out to Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him).
Al-Tirmidhi recorded it.
And Abd al-Hamid bin Ja'far narrated it from al-Ala', from his father, from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him), and he mentioned the above incident.
Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim recorded it.

وَقَالَ عَبْدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا حُسَيْنٌ الْجُعْفِيُّ ، عَنْ زَائِدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبَانَ ، عَنْ شَهْرِ بْنِ حَوْشَبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، يَرْفَعُهُ إِلَى النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " فَاتِحَةُ الْكِتَابِ تُعْدَلُ بِثُلُثَيِ الْقُرْآنِ "
قُلْتُ : أَبَانُ هُوَ الرَّقَاشِيُّ ، مَتْرُوكٌ .
قُلْتُ : أَبَانُ هُوَ الرَّقَاشِيُّ ، مَتْرُوكٌ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), attributing it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), that he said: "Surah al-Fatihah has been made equal to two-thirds of the Wise Qur'an."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: The Aban mentioned in its chain is in fact Aban al-Raqashi, and he is a matruk (abandoned) narrator (according to the hadith scholars).
