It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): "There was a man among the Children of Israel, or among the kings (of former times), who said (out of arrogance): 'I do not know of anyone today more honoured and powerful than myself.' The narrator said: Then Allah Almighty sent against him one of the very weakest of His creatures, which entered his nostril. So (from the severity of the pain) the man began to cry out: 'Strike, strike me!' So people began to strike his head with axes until they crushed his head to pieces."
Imam Ishaq bin Rahwayh recorded this narration in his Musnad.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "A man killed ninety-nine people, then he intended to repent. So he came to a monk who lived in a barren, desolate land and said: O monk, I have killed ninety-nine people; is there any room for repentance for me? He replied: No. The man said: Then the truth is that, by Allah, I will kill you and complete the number to a hundred. Then he came to another learned monk and said: I had taken ninety-nine lives and then completed the count of a hundred by killing a monk; is there any way of repentance for me now? He said: You have certainly transgressed greatly against yourself and committed a very grave sin, but remember that whoever repents, Allah Almighty accepts his repentance. The narrator said: The man at once threw down his sword and said: By Allah, I will now serve you until death separates us. The narrator said: He made a covenant with the monk that he would never disobey him. Then some travellers or famine-stricken people came there, and the monk used to practise medicine and treat people. The man asked the monk: Do you have any task for me? The monk said: Go and fire up the oven. So he went and heated the oven until it was blazing hot. Then he came and said: The oven has become hot; what is your command for me now? The monk said: Go and jump into it. So he went and leapt into the oven. Then the monk suddenly remembered him, so he and the people with him got up and went there, and they saw that the man was inside the oven drenched in sweat, while the fire had not harmed him in the least. Then the monk said: Now I know for certain that your repentance has been accepted in the court of Allah, so from now on I will serve you forever until you part from me."
Its chain is sahih (authentic), and there is a supporting narration (shahid) for it in Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim from the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Among the nations before you there was a man who lived among a disbelieving people, and near them was a town of righteous people. The man said to himself: 'I have remained in disbelief for a long time; now I will surely go to this righteous town so that I may live as one of them.' So he set out, but while he was still on the way, death overtook him. Then (in the matter of taking his soul) the angel and Satan began to dispute; one said: 'I have the greater right to him,' and the other said: 'I have the greater right to him.' Then Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, sent them an angel from among His hosts (to decide), who said: 'Measure the distance between the two towns; whichever town this man is found closer to, he will be counted among its people.' So they measured the distance between the two towns and found him closer to the town of the righteous, so he was counted among those righteous people."
This chain is sahih (authentic).
There is a supporting narration (shahid) for it in the two Sahihs.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "A monk worshipped Allah Almighty in his cell for sixty years. Then a woman came and stayed beside him, so the monk came down to her and spent six nights with her. Then he became deeply remorseful and regretful over his slip and fled from there. Then he reached a mosque and stayed there for three days in such a state that he had eaten nothing. Meanwhile a loaf of bread was given to him, so he broke it into two pieces and gave half the loaf to a poor man on his right and the other half to another poor man on his left. Then Allah Almighty took his soul. So when his sixty years of worship were placed in one pan of the scale of deeds and those six nights in the other, the six nights outweighed them (because of the burden of sin). Then when those six nights were weighed against the charity of that one loaf, the loaf proved heavier than them."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "A prophet supplicated against his nation (because of their rebellion). It was asked of him (by Allah Almighty): Would you like Me to set hunger and poverty over them? He said: No. Then he was asked: Would you like Me to cast their strife among themselves? He said: No. So the plague was set over them, which is a subtle death (coming quietly, suddenly and in great numbers); it scorches hearts with anguish and reduces the number (of people)."
