The virtue of "La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah"

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Awf bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and sat in the gathering of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the narrator related the whole account like the previous hadith, in which it is narrated that he (peace and blessings be upon him) then said: "Shall I not guide you to a great treasure from among the treasures of Paradise?" I said: "Certainly, O Messenger of Allah (do tell me)." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say: 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (there is no means of avoiding (evil) and no power (to do good) except by the enabling of Allah)."
Ishaq bin Rahwayh recorded it in his Musnad.

Amir bin Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah have mercy on him) relates: I met Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said to me (encouraging me): "Shall I not command you with what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) enjoined and urged upon me? That I should frequently say 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah', for these words are indeed a treasure from among the treasures of Paradise." The meaning of this supplication is: "The resolve to avoid sins and the strength to do good are possible only through the enabling and help of Allah."
Its chain is hasan (good).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) often used to say: "Shall I not show you the way to a most precious treasure from among the treasures of Paradise? Say often 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (without the enabling and help of Allah Almighty there is neither resolve to avoid (sins) nor strength to do good)."
Ibn Abi Shaybah recorded this hadith in al-Musannaf (3426). Its chain contains the narrator Abdullah bin Amir al-Aslami, who is da'if (weak); however, the virtue of this remembrance is established by other authentic hadith in the two Sahihs.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: One day I was in the blessed presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and I said 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' (without the help of Allah there is no means of avoiding sins and no strength to do good). He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: "Do you know what the explanation of this phrase is?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There is no means of refraining from disobedience to Allah except through the protection Allah grants, and there is no ability to carry out obedience to Allah except through the strength and enabling Allah gives. This is how Jibril (peace be upon him) informed me."
Abu Ya'la recorded this hadith in his Musnad. Its chain contains a narrator named Salih bin Bayan al-Sahili, who is da'if (weak), and because of him this narration is weak in its chain.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked (about this litany), and he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The phrase 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah', whose meaning is 'without the will and enabling of Allah there is no means of turning away from sins and no strength to do good', is one of the priceless treasures of the Divine Throne."
Al-Busiri declared the chain of this narration da'if (weak), because it contains a narrator named Hafs bin Abdullah al-Ifriqi, who has a weak memory.
