It is narrated from Muhammad bin Yahya bin Habban that Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) suffered from sleeplessness, or was afflicted with the trouble of being unable to sleep. He complained of this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered him to seek refuge, when lying down on his bed, through the perfect words of Allah in these words: 'A'udhu bi-kalimatillahi al-tammati min ghadabihi wa 'iqabihi wa sharri 'ibadih, wa min hamazati al-shayatini wa an yahdurun' (I seek refuge in the perfect and complete words of Allah from His anger, from His punishment, from the evil of His servants, and from the whisperings and incitements of the devils, and from their coming to me).
Imam Musaddad narrated this hadith in his Musnad. This narration is mursal, because Muhammad bin Yahya's hearing from Sayyiduna Khalid bin al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him) is not established; however, these words also occur among the adhkar in other authentic hadith.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Zayd bin Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: I complained to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) of the sleeplessness and inability to sleep that had afflicted me, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Say these words: 'Allahumma gharati al-nujum, wa hada'ati al-'uyun, wa anta hayyun qayyum, la ta'khudhuka sinatun wa la nawm, ya hayyu ya qayyum, ahdi' layli wa anim 'ayni' (O Allah, the stars have set and the eyes have become still (in sleep), while You are the Ever-Living who sustains the order of the universe; neither drowsiness overtakes You nor sleep [Surah al-Baqarah: 255]. O Ever-Living, O Guardian of the universe, make this night of mine peaceful and let my eye sleep)." Sayyiduna Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Then I recited this du'a, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, removed from me the distress I had been feeling.
Ibn Adi (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Amr bin al-Husayn is alone in narrating this report, and his hadith are severely weak and munkar (denounced). Moreover, Imam Abu Zur'ah (may Allah have mercy on him) declared him extremely weak, Imam Abu Hatim (may Allah have mercy on him) declared him matruk (abandoned, one whose narrations are not taken at all), and al-Khatib al-Baghdadi (may Allah have mercy on him) declared him a liar.
