قَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ ، عَنْ عَوْنِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لِي عُمَرُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : مَا يَسُرُّنِي بِاخْتِلَافِ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حُمْرُ النَّعَمِ ، لِأَنَّا إِنْ أَخَذْنَا بِقَوْلِ هَؤُلَاءِ أَصَبْنَا ، وَإِنْ أَخَذْنَا بِقَوْلِ هَؤُلَاءِ أَصَبْنَا .

It is narrated from Awn bin Abdullah bin Utbah that Umar bin Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) said to me: "It would never please me to receive red camels (the most precious of wealth) in exchange for the mutual (juristic) disagreement of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), for if we adopt the saying of these (one group of the Companions), we are right and correct, and if we adopt the saying of those (another group of the Companions), we still attain what is correct."

وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ : حَدَّثَنَا هُشَيْمٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا دَاوُدُ بْنُ أَبِي هِنْدٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي نَضْرَةَ ، عَنْ جَابِرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَالَ : إِنَّ ابْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ، وَأُبَيَّ بْنَ كَعْبٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا ، اخْتَلَفَا فِي الرَّجُلِ يُصَلِّي ، فَقَالَ أُبَيٌّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : يُصَلِّي فِي ثَوْبٍ ، وَقَالَ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : فِي ثَوْبَيْنِ ، فَبَلَغَ ذَلِكَ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيْهِمَا ، فَقَالَ : رَجُلَانِ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ اخْتَلَفَا فِي فُتْيَا وَاحِدَةٍ ، فَبِأَيِّ الْقَوْلَيْنِ يَصْدُرُ النَّاسُ ؟ ثُمَّ قَالَ : أَلَا إِنَّ الْقَوْلَ مَا قَالَ أُبَيٌّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، وَلَمْ يَأْلُ ابْنُ مَسْعُودٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud and Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with them both) disagreed about a man who prays. Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "He may pray in a single garment," while Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "(It is necessary that) he prays in two garments." When this reached the Commander of the Believers, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he sent for them both and said: "Two eminent figures among the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) have disagreed in the verdict on a single issue; now according to which of the two sayings should people act?" Then he himself gave the ruling, saying: "Take note! The correct view is what Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) said, and Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) also spared no effort (in this ijtihad)."
