قَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ بْنُ حَجَّاجٍ ، ثَنَا حَيَّانُ بْنُ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ ، ثَنَا أَبُو مِجْلَزٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : وَحَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللهِ بْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : إِنَّ رَايَةَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَتْ سَوْدَاءَ ، وَلِوَاؤُهُ أَبْيَضُ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) that "the standard (rayah) of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was black, and his banner (liwa') (peace and blessings be upon him) was white."
According to the scholars of language and the commentators of hadith, 'rayah' is the large flag that marks the overall command of the army on the battlefield, while 'liwa'' is the flag that is raised specifically as the emblem of the commander.

حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللهِ الْقُرَشِيُّ ، عَنْ عَنْبَسَةَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مِنْ آلِ سَعْدٍ ، عَنْ خَالِدِ بْنِ كِلَابٍ ، قَالَ : إِنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَنَسَ بْنَ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ : يَقُولُ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : إِنَّ اللهَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَكْرَمَ أُمَّتِي بِالْأَلْوِيَةِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has blessed my Ummah with a special honour and distinction through banners (of war and jihad)."
