It is narrated from Sayyiduna Talq bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that we were present with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when the delegation of the tribe of Abd al-Qays arrived. He (peace and blessings be upon him) (seeing their frail condition) asked: "What has happened to you, that your complexions have turned yellow, your bellies have swollen and your veins are showing?" They said: Our chief came to you and asked you about a drink (nabidh and the like) that suited our constitution, but you forbade him from using it, while we live in a land that is plague-ridden and severely oppressive in its heat. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Drink whatever (wholesome) drinks are pleasing to you and suitable for you."

It is narrated from Abu Wa'il (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: I went on a military expedition to Syria in the company of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him). We halted at a stopping place, where a landowner (dihqan) came to him, asking his way to the Commander of the Believers.
When the dihqan saw Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he fell into prostration (out of reverence). At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "What is this prostration?" He replied, "This is how we treat our kings." So he (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Prostrate only to your Lord who created you!" Then he said, "O Commander of the Believers! I have prepared food for you, so please come to my house." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "Is there anything in your house of the images made by the non-Arabs?" He replied, "Yes." So he (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "We have no need (to enter) your house; rather, go and send us one kind of food, and do not add anything to it."
The narrator said: Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) moved on, and the man sent the food to him, and he ate of it. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked his servant, "Is any of that nabidh left in your vessels?" He replied, "Yes." So he brought it to him, and he poured it into a vessel and then smelled it, and found its smell offensive (strong). So he poured water over it three times (so that its strength would go), then drank it and said, "When you begin to have a doubt or suspicion about any of your drinks, do this with it."
