Humayd bin Abd al-Rahman al-Himyari (may Allah have mercy on him) relates that news reached Sayyiduna Abu Musa al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had become displeased with people over some matter. So he came to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One of you says (frivolously): 'I have married, I have divorced,' whereas this is not the lawful way of the waiting period of the Muslims. Divorce the woman at the start of her waiting period (that is, in a state of purity in which there has been no intercourse)."
In the narration of Imam al-Tayalisi it is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Burdah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man would repeatedly say: I have divorced you, I have taken you back. When this reached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he expressed strong displeasure and said: "What is the matter with men who make sport of the limits set by Allah Almighty!"
