Ishaq relates: Jarir informed us through Mughirah, who said: I came to Imam Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) and said: A man named Sa'id has disputed with me. Then he narrated the full account.
The narrator says: After that Ibrahim al-Nakha'i said: That man once came to me as well, and he claimed that he had said to his wife: "Every wife of mine, other than you, is divorced three times." So I told him that the position of Judge Shurayh (may Allah have mercy on him) was that when the statement begins with divorce, it takes effect (even on the excepted wife).
Ibrahim al-Nakha'i further said: I learned that when he left he said: Is this anything but people's own opinion? Then I was informed that, out of scrupulousness, he left that woman.
Jarir says: Later I met Sa'id al-Zubaydi and asked him about this incident, and he said: I sought a ruling on this from Sa'id bin Jubayr (may Allah have mercy on him), and he said that the divorce does not take effect. Then Sa'id al-Zubaydi said: Listen! If on that day my knowledge and understanding had been as it is today, I would never have separated from that woman.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Mu'adh, Allah Almighty has not created anything on the face of the earth more beloved to Him than freeing slaves, and Allah Almighty has not created anything on the face of the earth more disliked by Him than divorce. So when a man says to his slave: 'You are free, in sha' Allah (if Allah wills),' he becomes free and no exception applies to it; but when he says to his wife: 'You are divorced, in sha' Allah (if Allah wills),' this exception is valid for him and no divorce takes place."
According to the hadith scholars, there is a break in the chain of this hadith, that is, it is a munqati' (broken) narration.
