It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him) that a guest came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me to a Jew with this message: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) says: Sell me (grain) or lend it to me until the month of Rajab." I went to him and conveyed the message to him, and he said: By Allah, I will never sell it nor lend it unless something is placed as a pledge! I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him (peace and blessings be upon him) of the situation, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, had he sold to me or lent to me, I would certainly have paid him (on time)! Indeed, I am trustworthy in the heavens and trustworthy on the earth; take my iron coat of mail to him." The narrator said: On that occasion this verse was revealed to console him (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the world: "And do not extend your eyes towards what We have given various groups of them to enjoy, the splendour of the worldly life." Imam Abu Bakr, Ishaq and Abu Ya'la also narrated the like of it through different chains, and one of these narrations states explicitly that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked a Jew for a loan of dates, and the Jew said: By Allah, I will not give without a pledge! Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am trustworthy in the heavens and trustworthy on the earth too."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever has pledged a piece of his land against a debt, he should deduct its expenses from its produce and, from what is surplus, pay off the debt he owes; and he will pay his debt from it once he has calculated his labour and expenses with justice and fairness and determined the share remaining to him."
