It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) whether he should observe sawm al-dahr (fasting for life). He (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade him from it. The man repeated his question three times, but he (peace and blessings be upon him) kept forbidding him. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "But fast as Dawud (peace be upon him) fasted: fast one day and break the fast one day (skip a day), for indeed this is the way of fasting of Dawud (peace be upon him)." So that man kept to this practice until his death, fasting one day and skipping one day.

Imam Ahmad bin Mani' (may Allah have mercy on him) relates that it is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "Indeed the best fasting is the fasting of my brother Dawud (peace be upon him); he used to fast half of his life, that is, he would fast one day and break the fast one day."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We were in the company of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he passed by a man. The people said that this man had been fasting continuously since such-and-such a time and never skipped a day. He (peace and blessings be upon him), expressing his displeasure at this excess, said: "He has neither fasted nor broken his fast." When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw signs of anger on his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed face, he said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the ruling if someone fasts two days and breaks the fast one day? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And who has the strength for that?" Then he said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about fasting one day and breaking the fast one day? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is the fasting of my brother Dawud (peace be upon him)." Then he said: O Messenger of Allah, (what of) someone who fasts one day and breaks the fast two days? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "And who has the strength for that?" Then he said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the virtue of fasting on Monday? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is the day on which I was born, and on that same day revelation and prophethood were sent down upon me." He said: O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about the fast of Arafah and Ashura? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One of them (the fast of Ashura) is an expiation for the sins of one year, and the other (the fast of Arafah) wipes out the sins of the previous year and the coming year."
I (Ibn Hajar) say: The preserved (mahfuz) version with this chain is that Abdullah bin Ma'bad narrated it in detail from Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him), and Imam Muslim and the compilers of the Sunan recorded it through that route.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna al-Faltan bin Asim al-Jarmi (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: We were sitting waiting for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He (peace and blessings be upon him) came, and at that time signs of anger were evident on his blessed face, until he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down. Then we saw his radiant face begin to shine with joy, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr) and the Messiah of misguidance (the Dajjal) were shown to me, so I came out for the purpose of telling you about them. But at the threshold of the mosque I met two men who were disputing with each other (or he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: fighting), and Satan was involved with them. When I separated them, I was made to forget it (its exact date). Now I will tell you some signs concerning the two of them: as for the Night of Decree, seek it in the odd nights of the last ten (of Ramadan); and as for the Messiah of misguidance, he is a man with a broad forehead, effaced in one eye, and broad-chested; in resemblance he is like so-and-so bin Abd al-Uzza or Abd al-Uzza bin Qatan."
The mention of the virtue of witnessing the Night of Decree near the Black Stone will come, in sha' Allah, at the beginning of the virtues of jihad.
