بَابُ أَمْرِ الْإِمَامِ بِالتَّخْفِيفِ

[قَالَ] إِسْحَاقُ : أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ حَمَّادٍ الْبَصْرِيُّ ، ثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ ، ثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، ثَنَا أَبُو صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " تَجَوَّزُوا فِي الصَّلَاةِ ، فَإِنَّ خَلْفَكُمُ الضَّعِيفَ وَالْكَبِيرَ وَذَا الْحَاجَةِ " .
419 \ 1 - قَالَ الْأَعْمَشُ : وَحَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ ، مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ .
419 \ 2 - قَالَ : وَحَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ النَّخَعِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ .
420 - قَالَ : وَحَدَّثَنَا حَبِيبُ بْنُ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، بِمِثْلِ ذَلِكَ .
قُلْتُ : حَدِيثُ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَخْرَجُوهُ .
419 \ 1 - قَالَ الْأَعْمَشُ : وَحَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ ، عَنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ ، مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ .
419 \ 2 - قَالَ : وَحَدَّثَنَا إِبْرَاهِيمُ النَّخَعِيُّ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ مِثْلَ ذَلِكَ .
420 - قَالَ : وَحَدَّثَنَا حَبِيبُ بْنُ أَبِي ثَابِتٍ ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، بِمِثْلِ ذَلِكَ .
قُلْتُ : حَدِيثُ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَخْرَجُوهُ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep the prayer brief and easy when leading it, for behind you among those following there are the weak, the elderly and those with needs."
Also, Imam al-A'mash narrated something similar via Ibrahim from al-Harith bin Suwayd from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and Ibrahim al-Nakha'i also narrated a similar hadith from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
Moreover, Habib bin Abi Thabit transmitted a similar saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) via Sa'id bin Jubayr from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both).
I (Ibn Hajar) say: The hadith scholars have recorded this hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in their books.
Also, Imam al-A'mash narrated something similar via Ibrahim from al-Harith bin Suwayd from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and Ibrahim al-Nakha'i also narrated a similar hadith from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).

Imam al-A'mash (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Ibrahim narrated to us something similar via al-Harith bin Suwayd from Sayyiduna Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) (may Allah be pleased with him).
Also, Ibrahim al-Nakha'i (may Allah have mercy on him) narrated something similar from Sayyiduna Abdullah (bin Mas'ud) (may Allah be pleased with him).

Habib bin Abi Thabit narrated something similar via Sa'id bin Jubayr from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Hafiz Ibn Hajar (may Allah have mercy on him) says: The hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) has been recorded by (the compilers of the six books).
[وَ] قَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : حَدَّثَنَا أَحْمَدُ بْنُ عِيسَى الْمِصْرِيُّ ، ثَنَا ابْنُ وَهْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي سَعِيدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ أَبِي الْعَمْيَاءِ قَالَ : إِنَّ سَهْلَ بْنَ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ بْنِ سَهْلٍ حَدَّثَهُ : أَنَّهُ دَخَلَ هُوَ وَأَبُوهُ عَلَى أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ زَمَنَ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، وَهُوَ أَمِيرٌ ، فَصَلَّى صَلَاةً خَفِيفَةً كَأَنَّهَا صَلَاةُ مُسَافِرٍ أَوْ قَرِيبٌ مِنْهَا ، فَلَمَّا سَلَّمَ قَالَ : يَرْحَمُكَ اللهُ [أَرَأَيْتَ] هَذِهِ الصَّلَاةَ ، الْمَكْتُوبَةُ أَمْ شَيْءٌ تَنَفَّلْتَهُ ؟ قَالَ : إِنَّهَا الْمَكْتُوبَةُ ، وَإِنَّهَا لَصَلَاةُ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ مَا أَخْطَأْتُ مِنْهَا [إِلَّا شَيْئًا] سَهَوْتُ عَنْهُ ، إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقُولُ : " لَا تُشَدِّدُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِكُمْ فَيُشَدَّدَ عَلَيْكُمْ ، فَإِنَّ قَوْمًا شَدَّدُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ فَشُدِّدَ عَلَيْهِمْ ، فَتِلْكَ بَقَايَاهُمْ فِي الصَّوَامِعِ [وَالدِّيَارَاتِ] وَرَهْبَانِيَّةً ابْتَدَعُوهَا مَا كَتَبْنَاهَا عَلَيْهِمْ .
It is narrated from Sahl bin Abi Umamah bin Sahl that he and his father went to Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) in the time of Umar bin Abd al-Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him), when he was governor, and he (Sayyiduna Anas) led a short prayer, as if it were the prayer of a traveller or close to it. When he gave the salam, the questioner said: 'Yarhamuka Allah' (May Allah have mercy on you), tell us, was this the obligatory prayer or did you offer a voluntary prayer? He replied: "It was indeed the obligatory prayer, and this indeed was the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). I have not fallen short in (performing) it except in something I overlooked out of forgetfulness." Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: "Do not be severe on yourselves, lest severity be imposed upon you, for a people were severe on themselves and so severity was imposed upon them. Their remnants are now (found) in the hermitages and monasteries (of the Christians), (as Allah said:) 'And monasticism, which they innovated, We did not prescribe it for them' [Surah al-Hadid: 27]."

وَقَالَ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مَنِيعٍ : حَدَّثَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، ثَنَا الْحَجَّاجُ ، وَابْنُ أَبِي لَيْلَى ، عَنِ الْأَصْبَغِ بْنِ نُبَاتَةَ ، عَنْ عَلِيٍّ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّهُ حَدَّثَهُمْ أَنَّ مُعَاذًا رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ صَلَّى بِقَوْمِهِ الْفَجْرَ فَقَرَأَ بِسُورَةِ الْبَقَرَةِ ، وَخَلْفَهُ رَجُلٌ أَعْرَابِيٌّ مَعَهُ نَاضِحٌ لَهُ ، فَلَمَّا كَانَ فِي الرَّكْعَةِ الثَّانِيَةِ صَلَّى الْأَعْرَابِيُّ وَتَرَكَ مُعَاذًا رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَأَخْبَرُوا بِهِ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَقَالَ : خِفْتُ عَلَى نَاضِحِي ، وَلِي عِيَالٌ [أَكْتَسِبُ] عَلَيْهِمْ ، فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " صَلِّ بِهِمْ صَلَاةَ أَضْعَفِهِمْ ، فَإِنَّ فِيهِمُ الصَّغِيرَ وَالْكَبِيرَ وَذَا الْحَاجَةِ ، [لَا تَكُنْ فَتَّانًا ] " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) led his people in the Fajr prayer and recited Surah al-Baqarah in it. Behind him there was a Bedouin man taking part in the prayer, who had his water-carrying camel with him. When the second rak'ah came, the Bedouin (separated from the congregation and) offered his prayer alone, leaving Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him). The people informed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of this, and the man said (by way of excuse): "I feared my water-carrying camel would be lost, and I have the responsibility of a family for whom I strive to earn." At this the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Lead them in prayer according to the capacity of the weakest among them, for among them are the young, the elderly and those with needs. Do not be one who puts people to trial (fitnah)."
The chain of this report of Ahmad bin Mani' is da'if (weak) because of al-Asbagh bin Nubatah; however, the basis of this incident is established in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim through other reliable chains, where the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) admonished Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) for a long recitation in the Isha prayer.
