قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ : حَدَّثَنَا الْفَضْلُ بْنُ دُكَيْنٍ ، ثَنَا زُهَيْرٌ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ عُبَيْدَةَ ، عَنْ صِلَةَ بْنِ زُفَرَ ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : قُمْتُ مَعَ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَيْلَةً مِنْ رَمَضَانَ ، فَقَامَ يَغْتَسِلُ وَسَتَرْتُهُ ، فَفَضَلَتْ مِنْهُ فَضْلَةٌ فِي الْإِنَاءِ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنْ شِئْتَ فَأَرِقْهُ ، وَإِنْ شِئْتَ فَصُبَّ عَلَيْهِ " . فَقُلْتُ : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، هَذِهِ الْفَضْلَةُ أَحَبُّ إِلَيَّ مِمَّا أَصُبُّ عَلَيْهِ . قَالَ : فَاغْتَسَلْتُ بِهِ ، وَسَتَرَنِي صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ . فَقُلْتُ : لَا تَسْتُرْنِي ! فَقَالَ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " بَلْ ، سَتَرْتُكَ كَمَا سَتَرْتَنِي " .

161 \ 2 - وَقَالَ الْحَارِثُ : حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ مَسْرُوقٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ الْفِهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَذَكَرَهُ مُطَوَّلًا .

161 \ 2 - وَقَالَ الْحَارِثُ : حَدَّثَنَا عُمَرُ بْنُ سَعِيدِ بْنِ مَسْرُوقٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ سُوَيْدٍ الْفِهْرِيِّ ، عَنْ حُذَيْفَةَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فَذَكَرَهُ مُطَوَّلًا .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him): I stood (in prayer) with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) one night in Ramadan. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) began to take a bath (ghusl), and I screened him (peace and blessings be upon him). When he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished his bath, some water was left over in the vessel, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you wish, pour it away, and if you wish, add more water to it." I said: O Messenger of Allah! This leftover (used) water is dearer to me than the (fresh) water I would add to it. He said: So I bathed with that water, and meanwhile the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) screened me. I said (out of respect): Do not screen me! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why not? I have screened you just as you screened me."
The narrator named Jabir is al-Ju'fi, who is da'if (weak).
Imam al-Harith, with his own chain, has mentioned this same incident in detail through Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

وَقَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، ثَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي عَطَاءٌ ، أَخْبَرَنِي صَفْوَانُ بْنُ يَعْلَى ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، قَالَ : بَيْنَمَا عُمَرُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ يَغْتَسِلُ إِلَى بَعِيرٍ ، يَعْنِي وَهُوَ مُحْرِمٌ ، وَأَنَا أَسْتُرُ عَلَيْهِ بِثَوْبٍ ، إِذْ قَالَ لِي : " يَا يَعْلَى ، اصْبُبْ عَلَى رَأْسِي الْمَاءَ ! " . قُلْتُ : أَمِيرُ الْمُؤْمِنِينَ أَعْلَمُ ، قَالَ : " وَاللهِ مَا أَرَى الْمَاءَ يَزِيدُ الشَّعَرَ إِلَّا شَعَثًا " ، قَالَ : " بِسْمِ اللهِ " ، وَأَفَاضَ عَلَى رَأْسِهِ .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ya'la bin Umayyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was taking a bath behind the cover of his camel while in the state of ihram, and I was screening him with a cloth. Meanwhile he said to me: "O Ya'la! Pour water on my head." I said: The Commander of the Believers knows better (whether doing so in ihram is proper or not). He said: "By Allah! I consider that water does nothing to the hair except make it more dishevelled and unkempt (that is, it does not cause hair to break)." Then he said 'Bismillah' (In the name of Allah) and poured water over his head.
