قَالَ أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ : حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحِيمِ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، عَنْ وَاصِلِ بْنِ السَّائِبِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سَوْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَمِّهِ أَبِي أَيُّوبَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ ، عَنْ رَسُولِ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ : " حَبَّذَا الْمُتَخَلِّلُونَ " . قَالَ : قَالُوا : يَا رَسُولَ اللهِ ، وَمَا الْمُتَخَلِّلُونَ ؟ قَالَ : " التَّخَلُّلُ مِنَ الْوُضُوءِ أَنْ تُخَلِّلَ بَيْنَ أَصَابِعِكَ وَأَظْفَارِكَ ، وَالتَّخَلُّلُ مِنَ الطَّعَامِ ، فَإِنَّهُ لَيْسَ شَيْءٌ أَشَدَّ عَلَى الْمَلَكِ الَّذِي مَعَ الْعَبْدِ مِنْ أَنْ يَجِدَ مِنْ أَحَدِكُمْ رِيحَ الطَّعَامِ " .
أَبُو سَوْرَةَ ضَعِيفٌ ، وَقَدْ أَخْرَجَ أَحْمَدُ أَصْلَهُ .

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How excellent are those who do khilal (those who take care of cleanliness)!" The Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) said: O Messenger of Allah, who are these people who do khilal? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Khilal in ablution means that you clean well between your fingers and the roots of your nails; and khilal after food means (removing the particles stuck between the teeth). For there is nothing more painful and burdensome to the angel who is constantly with the servant than that he should detect from any of you the smell of food (arising from the leftover particles)."
The narrator Abu Sawrah in its chain is weak; however, Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal (may Allah have mercy on him) recorded the original narration of this hadith.

وَقَالَ مُسَدَّدٌ : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَابِرٍ ، ثَنَا مُوسَى بْنُ أَبِي عَائِشَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ شَدَّادٍ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ قَالَ : إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَوَضَّأَ فَخَلَّلَ لِحْيَتَهُ بِأَصَابِعِهِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " هَكَذَا أَمَرَنِي رَبِّي عَزَّ وَجَلَّ أَنْ أُخَلِّلَ " .
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Shaddad (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed ablution and did khilal of his beard with his fingers (that is, he passed his fingers through the hair of his beard). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "My Lord, the Mighty and Majestic, has commanded me to do khilal in this way."

حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، حَدَّثَنِي وَاقِدٌ ، عَنْ مُصْعَبٍ قَالَ : رَأَى ابْنُ عُمَرَ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا قَوْمًا يَتَوَضَّؤُونَ فَقَالَ : " خَلِّلُوا " ، يَعْنِي بَيْنَ الْأَصَابِعِ .
It is narrated from Mus'ab (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) saw some people performing ablution and said to them (teaching them the etiquettes of ablution): "Do khilal." He meant doing khilal to make water reach between the fingers.
The chain of this report (athar) is sahih. Imam Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated it in al-Musannaf (hadith: 106), and all its narrators are thiqat (trustworthy).

وَقَالَ أَبُو يَعْلَى : ثَنَا مَسْرُوقٌ ، ثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي زَائِدَةَ ، عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ ، عَنْ عَامِرِ بْنِ شَقِيقٍ ، عَنْ شَقِيقٍ قَالَ : تَوَضَّأَ عُثْمَانُ رَضِيَ اللهُ عَنْهُ فَخَلَّلَ أَصَابِعَ رِجْلَيْهِ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : " رَأَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَعَلَ ذَلِكَ " .
It is narrated from Shaqiq (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) performed ablution and did khilal between the toes of his feet, then said: "I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do the same."
