It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hanzalah bin al-Rahib (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man greeted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply to him (immediately) until he (peace and blessings be upon him) had performed tayammum (wiping by striking his hands on a wall or the like). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Nothing prevented me from replying to your greeting except that I was not in a state of ablution (purity)." Or the narrator said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) did not reply to his greeting until he (peace and blessings be upon him) had performed tayammum (wiping), and then he replied to him.

Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Baylamani narrates from his father that he saw Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) sitting on the platforms (seating places) performing ablution. Meanwhile a man passed by him and greeted him with salam, but he did not reply to his greeting until he had finished his ablution. Then he entered the mosque, went and stood by that man, and said: "Nothing prevented me from replying to your greeting except that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: 'Whoever performs ablution and then does not speak (until he finishes) until he has said these words: "Ashhadu an la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la sharika lah, wa anna Muhammadan abduhu wa rasuluh" (I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah, He is alone and has no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the servant of Allah and His Messenger), the sins of the interval between his two ablutions are forgiven.'"
In the chain of this hadith, Muhammad bin Abd al-Rahman bin al-Baylamani is a weak narrator, because of which this narration is weak in its chain according to the hadith scholars.
