It is narrated from Ibn Shihab (may Allah have mercy on him) that he said: "The Sunnah on the night when the crescent is looked for, for the fasts of Ramadan or for Eid al-Fitr, is that the adhan for the Maghrib prayer be given at its appointed time, but the iqamah of the prayer then be delayed until the crescent is seen or there is despair of seeing it, and some stars begin to appear in the sky."
This narration explains the Sunnah method of sighting the crescent and watching for it for the beginning of the fasts or for Eid al-Fitr.
