It is narrated from Udaysah bint Uhban bin Sayfi that she said: I arrived when my father's death was approaching, and he left the instruction: "Do not shroud me in a stitched shirt." The family said: "That is unavoidable (that is, putting a shirt on him with the shroud is necessary)." So I sent someone to the washerman, because my father had a shirt there for washing; it was brought, and he was dressed in it, then he was carried away (for the funeral). I closed my door and followed the funeral, then when I returned to my house I found that same shirt inside the house. I sent for the people who had washed my father and asked them: "Did you shroud him in his shirt?" They replied: "Yes." I asked again: "Is it this shirt that is here?" They said: "Yes."
Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal recorded this hadith in abridged form, with these words: It is narrated from the daughter of Sayyiduna Uhban (may Allah be pleased with him) that her father had ordered his family to shroud him but not to dress him in a shirt. She said: When morning came, we saw that the shirt was on the clothes stand.
